Abstract

This article presents the results of a study conducted under l’Initiative francophone pour la formation à distance des maîtres (IFADEM) (the Francophone initiative for distance training of teachers). The objective of this project, a joint collaboration between the International Organisation for Francophonie (OIF) and the Agency of French-speaking Universities (AUF), is to develop a hybrid program that combines traditional education, information and communication technologies (ICT), and distance education methods to teach French. The first experiment was run in four countries, three of them African: Burundi, Benin, and Madagascar. Building on the IFADEM project, this study aims to draw a portrait of the role of ICT in African initial training programs for French teachers. We conclude that ICT are currently being incorporated into initial training programs for French teachers, and we recommend some effective potential uses of ICT.
